Joe Root and Nat Sciver-Brunt head Professional Cricketers’ Association awards shortlist

Previous winners Joe Root and Nat Sciver-Brunt are in contention for the 2024 Professional Cricketers’ Association player of the year awards.

Root, PCA men’s player of the year in 2021 and winner of the young player award in 2012, has been shortlisted alongside England team-mate Gus Atkinson, Hampshire’s Liam Dawson and Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram.

Sciver-Brunt, winner of the women’s award in 2017 and 2022, is joined by Northern Diamonds’ Hollie Armitage, The Blaze’s Kathryn Bryce and South East Stars’ Paige Scholfield.

The shortlists, featuring domestic and international performers, were decided by fellow players before the awards are held on 1 October.

Root, 33, has scored 1,262 international runs over the past 12 months and surpassed Alastair Cook’s England record of Test centuries by reaching his 34th Test ton.

Atkinson has starred after making his international debut, all-rounder Dawson leads the PCA men’s domestic overall MVP after winning the award last year, while South African Ingram amassed almost 2,000 runs across the summer.

Meanwhile, Sciver-Brunt was awarded Women’s ODI Player of the Summer, scoring 233 from four innings, and the 32-year-old was The Hundred’s top scorer with 303 runs.

Armitage debuted for England and was the second-highest run-scorer in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Scotland’s Bryce was the leading batter as The Blaze won the Charlotte Edwards Cup, and Scholfield also shone with the bat to earn an England debut.

Tammy Beaumont and Harry Brook won the awards last year.

The awards also recognise emerging talents under the age of 24 in England and Wales, like Root 12 years ago.

Three England debutants have been shortlisted for men’s young player, with Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell, Essex’s Jordan Cox and Surrey’s Jamie Smith in contention.

South East Stars team-mates Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Ryana MacDonald-Gay, plus Thunder’s Seren Smale, are in the running for the women’s young player award.
