Man held after online comments about West Brom fan death

A social media user has been arrested after messages apparently mocking the death of a man at a Sheffield Wednesday game were shared online.

West Brom supporter Mark Townsend died from a medical episode during the match on Saturday at the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough Stadium, where fans died as a result of a crush in 1989.

A social media account, which has since been deleted, was alleged to have made reference to the 97 Liverpool fans who died.

A man, aged 55, had been arrested on suspicion of malicious communications and remained in police custody, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.
