CHENNAI: Education from St Hilda’s, Ooty, B.Com from Stella Maris, Chennai, a Younger India Fellowship at Ashoka College, Delhi, and MA in Journalism from Boston College — Madurai woman Shwetha Surendran is making strides at ESPN in the USA. She is the inaugural fellow and the primary South Indian to have bagged ESPN’s Investigative Journalism Fellowship with American College, following which she was recruited by ESPN’s Investigative and Enterprise Unit in Washington DC.
A former intern with The Hindu and The New Indian Specific, the seeds of her curiosity in journalism have been sown at a younger age. “The primary time I did correct journalism was at Hilda’s; in fourth or fifth grade, I used to be recruited to be a part of a journalism membership. It was for the college paper referred to as the Hilda’s Herald. I liked going round and speaking to individuals; I didn’t even understand it was journalism then. It has been a ardour ever since,” she shares.
With a eager curiosity in investigative journalism, this F1 and soccer fan — a fiercely loyal FC Barcelona ladies’s staff fan — opted for sports activities investigative knowledge journalism. “As I grew up, I noticed sports activities in a unique gentle; the cash and the scandals me. And (issues like) geopolitics, sexual harassment, all of it bleed into sports activities. After I noticed that I may concentrate on these moderately than what occurs inside a sport, that appealed to me,” she provides.
